After a season defined more by injury management than results, Taylor Fritz finally has something he hasn’t had in months: a little momentum.

The American reached the Stuttgart final last weekend in his strongest showing since returning from a chronic knee injury that repeatedly interrupted his season. Although he let a third-set that seemed to be on his racket slip away against Ben Shelton in a familiar heartbreak—their Dallas final followed a similar script—Fritz sounded far more encouraged by the state of his game than discouraged by the loss when we hopped on a call while he was prepping for Halle today.

We talked about how he’s feeling with a few matches under his belt, whether the race to be America’s top-ranked man factors into his matchup with Shelton, his expectations for Wimbledon with Carlos Alcaraz out of the field, and his deepening interest in fashion.
